Thoughts on Room Design:
Silent Night
Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hoch heilige Paar.
Holder Knab' im lockigen Haar,
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
- Josef Franz Mohr (c.1818) -
Such are the, now infamous, words written by Father Joseph Mohr in 1816. I recall, as a boy, Bing Crosby crooning the words of this most beloved
carol. Reading my Pop-Up version of "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by the glow of the fire. The music in the
background singing of that most Holiest of Nights.
I could imagine the Austrian hills blanketed in sheaths of unfettered snow; a single Christmas
star shining on the horizon; a small steepled church with stained glass windows gently glowing on a brisk Christmas Eve night; a hand-carved life-sized
crèche to the side of the podium; a babe wrapped in swaddling laid in a trough padded with excelsior; the smell of apple cider and cinnamon sticks
flowing through the halls. A boy my age in his best lederhosen curled up under his mother's flabby arm; mother brushing the hair from his
furrowed brow; legs stretched across the pew after a long day in the hills. A single guitar strumming out the haunting melody - the congregation
chiming in on the, then, unfamiliar chorus.
Now, as I brush the curls from my own child's eyes and place a kiss on his forehead - the words: "schlafe in himmlischer Ruh..." Be at peace, my son.
